I’ll be going through Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile. Mostly I’ll be staying in Hostels, but I do intend to take 2-4 hikes of 3-6 days each. I’m sure I’ll be buying trinkets and gifts for folks back home, but I’m not sure how many and, depending on cost, I’ll probably end up shipping a lot of things home rather than carry them. What backpack should I buy for this trip? I’ve considered several, but there are so many choices! I’ve considered the Kelty 3100, but it may be too small. Also, the Osprey Aether 45, but again, maybe too small, but then the Kelty Redwing 5000 or 5600 might be way too big and heavy. I want something light that I can take up Macchu Picchu, but also something that will hold all the stuff I accumulate over 3 months in South America, but I have no idea how much or little that may be. Hydration pack is no concern at all. I wouldn’t use one. Thanks
Just to respond to Marina Rat (although I’m not sure why I’m giving you the time of day). I DO NOT claim to know more than you or anyone else about this subject. THAT’S WHY I ASKED THE QUESTION. I actually realize that I know VERY LITTLE about the subject, which is why I asked the question. Also, I HAVE been outside my country several times, just not in this fashion. YOU seem to be the one who thinks he knows everything. I mean, you did SEEK OUT my question to answer, right? Then why be a jerk? Just answer the question and keep the insults to yourself. But thanks for the 40 lb limit idea. I WILL keep that in mind, as that could be valuable advice. If only it had been presented in a manner that didn’t portray you as a jerk……….

I was thinking about going to Rio in Feb for Carnaval, then heading south into patagonia, then back up north through Chile & Peru, then into Colombia and Venezuela before taking the amazon back into Brazil to go fly home. I’m planning on spending six months to do this. My problem, though, is that I may need to wait until late April/early May to go because of work obligations. So…should I go ahead as planned but leave in April/May or should I wait a few months so I don’t freeze my **** off in Patagonia? June-July-August are the coldest months there, right?

Hey guys,

I’m 20 years old and am planning my first vacation on my own. I’ve had the fortune of being able to travel over South East Asia while I was living at home: Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Japan, China, Singapore, Malaysia and Jamaica as well. Its been a couple of years since I’ve been on a trip and I think it’s time I take a little vacation again I’ve already traveled Asia so that’s off the list… Europe’s too expensive so that’s off too… My father’s from Mexico and I know a couple of people from Brazil and Peru, so I’ve decided this should be my next destination. While tourist spots are popular for a reason and I would like to see them, I would also like to go to places that not everybody knows about. I want to:

visit local beaches
eat great food
party and rave with awesome people
Do a little hiking and camping
visit historic and cultural spots

‘m thinking I might hit up Brazil, Peru and Argentina but I still need to do a bit of research…

Where are the best places to visit in Latin/South America?

Thanks
