For ten years my family and I have lived on the island of Chiloe, in Southern Chile. Truly a magical place and one of the most lovely (temperate- not tropical) places I’ve ever been. Problem is, few locals appreciate what they have here. Anyone interested? We live on the beach, have chickens, cows, greenhouse, garden, water from a spring and run our own small business. Aiming for the healthiest food and quality time with our kids. My wife is from Peru and I”m from the US and we have twin 7 year old girls and a 1.5 yr old girl. Land and building is cheap (1.25 acres with ocean US$20k and build a green wooden home for US$35). Life is not easy but it is FULL of goodness, good things and awareness.

I live in America and when I told everyone I was coming to Colombia they all freaked out, said I was going to be robbed, kidknapped, beaten up, bla bla….¨don´t eat the meat, it might be dog, or rat¨¨…
I didn´t believe everything everyone said because I had been to Peru the previous summer but I was a little worried about the violence here. Now, I do understand that there is a lot of violence in the jungles with the guerrilla and everything but…when I finally arrived to Bogota I thought….wow…people in America are pretty ignorant…there is a lot poverty here in some parts but….I can´t count the number of rich people I´ve seen in the city…and no offense…but most people I have run into are a lot more educated than most people back home….unfortunately it´s true.lol.well, I guess people should get to new a country before they talk bad about it…because COLOMBIA is completely different from what people say about it in the Usa.I´d say MANY parts are just as good as nyc

For the blame America first group….here is the list:

Linfen, China, where residents say they literally choke on coal dust in the evenings, exemplifies many Chinese cities;

Haina, Dominican Republic, has severe lead contamination because of lead battery recycling, a problem common throughout poorer countries [image];

Ranipet, India, where leather tanning wastes contaminate groundwater with hexavalent chromium, made famous by Erin Brockovich, resulting in water that apparently stings like an insect bite [image];

Mailuu-Suu, Kyrgyzstan, home to nearly 2 million cubic meters of radioactive mining waste that threatens the entire Ferghana valley, one of the most fertile and densely populated areas in Central Asia that also experiences high rates of seismic activity;

La Oroya, Peru, where the metal processing plant, owned by the Missouri-based Doe Run Corporation, leads to toxic emissions of lead;

Dzerzinsk, Russia, one of the country’s principal chemical weapons manufacturing sites until the end of the Cold War [image];

Norilsk, Russia, which houses the world’s largest heavy metals smelting complex;

Rudnaya Pristan, Russia, where lead contamination resulted in child blood lead levels eight to 20 times maximum allowable U.S. levels;

Chernobyl, Ukraine, infamous site of a nuclear meltdown 20 years ago; and

Kabwe, Zambia, where child blood levels of lead are five to 10 times the allowable EPA maximum

http://www.livescience.com/environment/061018_polluted_places.html

Note how many are in the former Soviet Block and Socialist nations.

The local church extends ministry to kids in Peru. I think it would be a better use fo the funds, if we mean to improve their lives and their community, to bring kids *here* and get them a decent education. After all, what is one more to most families?

I have no idea, and I mean *no* idea how to get the paperwork to allow this to happen… If you have good references or personal experinece of this sort of thing, I would appreciate your help. Thanks in advance!
The reason we have to go to these places year after year, generation after generation, to provide medical care and expertise in everything from sanitary wells to sanitary sewer is that the people there do not have enough education to do it for themselves. It seems good to me to give people better options than depending on charity forever.
