Have you ever been drunk at work?

peru home
ZoeLouise asked:

Workers in Peru who turn up drunk in the morning cannot be fired, the country’s top court has ruled.

Pablo Cayo was given the sack for being intoxicated at work, but his employer has now been ordered to give him his job back.

Fernando Calle, one of the justices at the court, said that although Mr Cayo was drunk, he did not offend or hurt anybody.

So if you turned up drunk at work, how would your employers respond?

I used to work at restaurant in San Francisco. I would show up buzzed and then drink free wine all night during my shift, by the time it was time to leave I’d be wasted. I don’t think my boss minded, in fact he usually poured me my first drink!

A little bit but not enough for people to tell. There are a few people worse than me who turn up at 8am to start work and have been up all night drinking spirits. They’re all over the place and stink of booze but no one says anything. They were supposed to be bringing in a breathalyser test in the new year for people to take but nothings been said of it since. One of the security guards come in pissed up the once because he was depressed and they sacked him. But one of their jobs is to make announcements on the tannoy and tell people to phone numbers so when he was slurring his words and sounded as if his dog had been shot then people got suspicious and he was caught. Oh well just a crazy place to work. :-)

I think I would be dragged off the premises by my hair and slung into the lake in the grounds of our building! I often joke at work that I would like a vodka when things are stressful, but I would never turn up drunk…though I have gone in with very bad hangovers before!

    no

but i know a head teacher who has ….often

i daresay being drunk in charge of children might be breaking some rule or other …but for a head teacher sitting in an office it is not seen as important by the school’s chair of governors …..disgusting

  23. Skidoo says:

When I started working, over 25 years ago, people regularly went to the pub at lunch time! And when I first started at London Underground a little under 20 years ago, I’d go to the pub with the line controllers a lunchtime and have a couple of pints. That all changed after the Kings Cross fire and jobs were graded for how much you could drink, and how long beforehand, before a shift. Even office jobs were graded.

With my current employer? I have very occasionally gone out for a pint at lunchtime, we all have a drink at the Christmas do and that’s about it.

  24. Cherries and Cream says:

No I have never been drunk at work. Hungover yes!

However, did you know that it is illegal to sack someone who is a registered alcoholic for turning up drunk to work? It is because alcoholism is classed as an illness.

  25. simm101 says:

I used to own my own bar so it wasn’t a problem and as much as I would have liked to, I couldn’t sack myself.

  26. Ben Gunn says:

I like a drink, but I would be ashamed of being seen drunk anywhere.
